How to Configure HSRP on Cisco

Cisco Routing Network Administrator

Hot Standby Protocol(HSRP) is a network protocol that provides redundancy in router networks for different VLANs. HSRP is a Cisco proprietary protocol. its used UDP port 1985 and Multicast address 224.0.0.102( V2) and 224.0.0.2 ( V1).HSRP MAC address Format: 0000.0c07.ACxx

for redundancy protocol others vendor used VRRP(Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol)

HSRP ensures only a single router is forwarding packets that called active router on behalf of the virtual router at any given time. A standby router is ready to become the active router. if the current device is failure standby router becomes the active router. On a particular LAN, multiple hot standby groups may coexist and overlap. Each standby-group defendd a single virtual router. For each standby group, a single well-known MAC address is allocated to the group, as well as an IP address.HSRP must be configured between interfaces that have Layer2 connectivity between them. in this article, we share how to configure HSRP on Cisco Device.

Router IOU1
IOU1(config)# int fa0/1
IOU1(config-if)# ip address 172.16.10.1 255.255.255.0
IOU1(config-if)# standby 1 ip 172.16.10.3
IOU1(config-if)# standby 1 preempt(preempt allows the router to become the active router when priority is high.)
IOU1(config-if)# standby 1 priority 110(preempt allows router is active router when priority is high.)
IOU1(config-if)# standby 1 track fa0/0(track uplink)

Router IOU2
IOU2(config)# int fa0/1
IOU2(config-if)# ip address 172.16.10.2 255.255.255.0
IOU2(config-if)# standby 1 ip 172.16.10.3
IOU2(config-if)# standby 1 preempt(preempt allows the router to become the active router when priority is high)
IOU2(config-if)# standby 1 priority 100(preempt allows router is active router when priority is high.)
IOU2(config-if)# standby 1 track fa0/0(track uplink)
Now connect host using default gw 172.16.10.3
