How to configure VTP on Cisco

VTP means Virtual Trunking Protocol. its created by cisco and manage VLAN for a large Network. switches use VLAN trunking protocol to communicate among themselves about VLAN configuration. VTP is very useful Protocol to Create,Manage and Maintain large Network. VTP can manage addition, deletion, and renaming of VLANs from a central point without manual intervention and VTP thus reduces network administration in a switched network. VTP are three version. VTP version 1 and VTP version 2 is almost similar. VTP Version 3 introduces the concept of transferring an thick database in situations where VTP version 1 and VTP version 2 interacted with the vlan process Directly. VTP version 3 Support Max vlan 4096.

VTP Mode: 3 type of VTP Mode

  1.  VTP  Server
  2.  VTP Client
  3.  VTP  Transparent

 

Basic Configure

Now we configure VTP Mode Server and Vlan 10 for Technical, 
Vlan 20 for Admin, Vlan 30 For Accounts, Vlan 40 for HR and 
Vlan 50 for Training. Configure Vtp domain cisco with password cisco123
vtp mode is server. 

S1#configure terminal 
S1(config)#vtp mode server 
Device mode already VTP SERVER.
S1(config)#vtp domain cisco
Changing VTP domain name from NULL to cisco
S1(config)#vtp password cisco123
Setting device VLAN database password to cisco123
S1(config)#vlan 10
S1(config-vlan)#name Technical
S1(config-vlan)#exit 
S1(config)#vlan 20 
S1(config-vlan)#name Admin 
S1(config-vlan)#exit 
S1(config)#vlan 30 
S1(config-vlan)#name Accounts 
S1(config-vlan)#exit 
S1(config)#vlan 40 
S1(config-vlan)#name HR 
S1(config-vlan)#exit 
S1(config)#vlan 50 
S1(config-vlan)#name Training 
S1(config-vlan)#exit 
S1(config)#

Now we check VTP and VLAN status
S1#show vtp status

Now we configure SW2 as a VTP mode Client.
S2>configure terminal 
S2(config)#vtp mode client 
Setting device to VTP CLIENT mode.
S2(config)#vtp domain cisco
Changing VTP domain name from NULL to cisco
S2(config)#vtp password cisco123
Setting device VLAN database password to cisco123
S2(config)#

Now we check VTP and VLAN status in SW2

S1#show vtp status

Now we configure SW4 as a VTP mode Transparent.

S4(config)#vtp mode transparent 
Setting device to VTP TRANSPARENT mode.

S4(config)#vtp password cisco123
Setting device VLAN database password to cisco123

Now we check SW4 Vlan Status

in sw4 vlan not came automatically because of its running VTP 
Transparent Mode, Need to add vlan Manually.

S4(config-vlan)#name Admin
S4(config-vlan)#exit
S4(config)#vlan 30

S4(config)#vlan 50

after add Vlan manually we check Vtp and VLan status.
